VAT done right for Czechia, Slovakia and the whole EU

Magento doesn’t calculate VAT from whatever you type next to a price, but by rules. Every product has a tax class, so does every customer, and the destination country sets the rate. That way the store charges a Czech customer, a Slovak business and a consumer elsewhere in the EU correctly.

The rate picks itself

You set the rates for the countries you sell to and assign classes to products and customers. On every order, the store then picks the right rate without you lifting a finger.

How Magento picks the VAT rate Diagram: three inputs - the product tax class (book, reduced rate), the customer tax class (private person) and the destination country (Slovakia) - meet in a tax rule that picks the rate from them: the Slovak reduced rate. The same book shipped to Brno gets the Czech reduced rate; a business in Germany with a valid VAT ID is sold to without VAT. THREE INPUTS, ONE RATE PRODUCT Book class reduced rate CUSTOMER Private person consumer DELIVERY Bratislava country Slovakia Tax rule product × customer × country RESULTING RATE Slovak reduced rate The same book to Brno - Czech reduced rate A business in Germany with a valid VAT ID - no VAT (reverse charge)

Product, customer and country

A tax rule ties three things together: the product class, the customer class and the destination country. From that combination it picks the rate. A book for a private person in Slovakia gets the reduced Slovak rate, the same book shipped to Brno gets the reduced Czech rate.

Product classes for the standard, reduced and zero rate. You pick a product’s class once.

Rates by destination country and region - the basis for selling to other EU countries under the OSS scheme.

VAT ID validation in VIES and automatic customer assignment Diagram: the customer enters a VAT ID at registration or at checkout, the store validates it in the European VIES system and assigns the customer to a group based on the result. Valid VAT ID from another EU country: VAT‑registered EU business, sold without VAT under reverse charge. Valid Czech VAT ID: Czech company with Czech VAT. Invalid VAT ID: consumer with VAT of the destination country. VAT ID VALIDATION IN VIES Customer enters VAT ID at registration or at checkout Validation in VIES European VAT ID validation system VALID, OTHER EU EU VAT payer sold without VAT VALID, CZECHIA Czech company Czech VAT INVALID Consumer destination VAT The group and its tax class you set once, then assignment runs by itself.

EU businesses without manual switching

When a business customer enters a VAT ID, the store validates it in the European VIES system. Based on the result, it puts the customer in a group you’ve assigned a tax mode to - for example, selling without VAT to VAT‑registered businesses from another EU country.

Validation runs at registration and at checkout, so you don’t have to check anything by hand.

A customer with an invalid VAT ID stays in consumer mode and pays VAT by the destination country.

VAT in detail

The right rate is half the job. The other half is how the price with tax is shown to the customer and how VAT is broken down on documents.

Rates and classes

You enter rates for each country, and for regions if needed. When a rate changes, you update it in one place.

Product tax classes: standard, reduced and zero rate.

Customer tax classes: consumers and VAT‑registered EU businesses each have their own mode.

Taxes can be set separately for each website, for example a Czech and a Slovak store.

Prices incl. and excl. VAT

You enter catalog prices including or excluding VAT - whichever you’re used to.

Customers see prices incl. VAT, excl. VAT, or both. Separately for the catalog, the cart and documents.

In the cart, the order and on the invoice, VAT can be broken down by individual rates.
